Mt Etna Volcano, Italy
Two paroxysmal eruptions occurred at Mt Etna volcano, Italy. The first eruption occurred at Voragine crater on 3rd December 2015 and was followed by Strombolian eruptions inside the crater. On 4th December there was a second paroxysm at Voragine crater. Lava fountains were visible and ash emission to 7000 m above the summit. The eruption was accompanied by ash emission from a new pit crater on the east flank of the New Southeast Crater. Volcanic tremor remains elevated. Three sulphur dioxide eruption plumes drifted to Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Iran and Turkmenistan.

Bromo Volcano, Indonesia
Bromo volcano Indonesia was raised to level 3 alert (Siaga) on 4th December 2015 after an increase in volcanic earthquakes. An exclusion zone of 2.5 km radius was placed around the crater.

Momotombo Volcano, Nicaragua
The first eruptions at Momotombo volcano in 110 years began on 4th December 2015. Ash reached an altitude of 8,000 m and fell on the towns of La Concha, Amancitan, Los Arcos, La Piedra, La Seiba, Lechecuagos, Chacraseca, Papalonal and Puerto Momotombo. Volcanic tremor was recorded and explosions every 4 seconds. A 6 km exclusion zone was placed around the volcano.

Awu Volcano, Indonesia
Awu volcano was raised to level 2 alert (Waspada) on 24th November 2015 due to shallow volcanic earthquakes. A 3 km radius exclusion zone was placed around the volcano.

Rinjani Volcano, Indonesia
Airport in Bali, Indonesia reopened after being closed due to ash emission from Rinjani volcano on neighbouring island of Lombok. The eruption has disrupted flights over the past several days, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The eruption affected airports in Lombok, Bali, and east Java.

Rinjani Volcano, Indonesia

Rinjani volcano on Lombok, Indonesia erupted on 25th October 2015. The eruption occurred at Barujari cone. Ash emissions reached an altitude of 10,000 ft and extended 40 nautical miles southwest of the volcano. Seismis tremor continues to be recorded. The alert status at Rinjani volcano was increased to level 2 (waspada). A 3-km radius exclusion was placed around the Rinjani caldera.

Cotopaxi Volcano, Ecuador

An eruption of Cotopaxi volcano (Ecuador) occurred on 14th August 2015. Ash reached an altitude of 50,000 ft. Initial explosions were phreatic and didn't indicate magma had reached the surface. Ashfall was reported north of the volcano.

A fissure eruption began at Piton de la Fournaise volcano, Reunion Island on 31st July 2015. This was the third eruption of the volcano in 2015.

Kick 'em Jenny Submarine Volcano, Grenada

A swarm of earthquakes began at Kick 'em Jenny Submarine volcano, Grenada on Thursday, July 23rd from 1:25am to 3:00am local time. Divers observed degassing off the west coast of Grenada in the Moliniere Sculpture Park area. On 23rd July 2015 the alert status was raised to ORANGE. Kick-'em-Jenny Volcano is an active submarine volcano 8 km off the north coast of Grenada, Caribbean. Explosive eruptions of Kick-'em-Jenny volcano have broken the sea surface only three times historically in 1939,1974 and 1988.

Tinakula Volcano, Solomon Islands

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit 60 km west of Tinakula volcano, Solomon Islands, on 18th July 2015. The focus was shallow at 12 km. No tsunami was generated. Earthquakes of this magnitude can affect nearby volcanoes.

Bulusan Volcano, Philippines

A phreatic eruption occurred at Bulusan volcano, Philippines on 17th July 2015. The eruption produced an explosion earthquake which lasted for 11 minutes. Sounds were heard 6km from the summit. The eruption produced a 200 m high ash plume which caused ashfall in nearby areas. Inflation of the volcano was recorded in June and July 2015.

Gamalama Volcano, Indonesia

Gamalama volcano erupted at 9:58 am on 16th July 2015. The eruption was phreatic and produced an ash cloud. On 18th July 2015, ash emissions from Gamalama volcano, Indonesia, reached an altitude of 7000 ft and drifted 65 nautical miles west.

Raung Volcano, Indonesia

Activity began at Raung volcano in June 2015. On 10th July 2015 ash emissions reached 17,000 ft altitude and extended 110 nautical miles southeast. Ash cloud caused flight disruptions at Denpasar International airport, Bali.

Kuchinoerabu-jima Volcano, Japan

An explosive eruption occurred at Kuchinoerabu-jima volcano, Japan on 29th May 2015. Ash cloud 32,000 ft altitude. The island of Kuchinoerabu-jima in the northern Ryuku Islands contains three stratovolcanoes: Furu-dake, Shin-dake and Sankakuten-yama. The island contains approximately 140 residents and is located 130 km south of the city of Kagoshima.

Wolf Volcano, Galapagos Islands

An eruption of Wolf volcano, Galapagos Islands began on 24th May 2015. The eruption began with a magnitude 4.7 earthquake and explosive activity. Wolf Volcano is located in the northern part of Isabela Island, and is the tallest volcano in the Galapagos (1710 m). The previous eruption at Wolf volcano occurred in 1982. At 04:34 hr on 24th May an eruption column reached an altitude of 50,000 ft and drifted east-northeast. Satellite images showed an intense hotspot on the southeast flank of the volcano, confirming eruptive activity. National park staff observed a fissure on the upper south-southeast flank of the volcano with several lava flows moving towards the sea. The eruption will have effects on the flora and fauna as well as the marine environment when the lava reaches the sea. The previous eruption of Wolf volcano occurred in 1982. More on Wolf volcano…

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

The lava lake in the Overlook crater at the summit of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii overflowed on 28th April 2015. The lava spilled out onto the floor of Halemaumau crater. Pahoehoe lava flowed 130 m across the crater floor. The lava lake activity was accompanied by rockfalls, explosions and ashfall at Jaggar museum overlook. A perched lava lake has begun to form similar to lava lake activity seen during 1800’s and 1900’s. Additional volcanic activity is possible along the east rift zone between between Pauahi Crater and Pu'u O'o.

Calbuco Volcano, Chile

An explosive eruption occurred at Calbuco volcano, Chile on 22 April 2015. About 1500 residents were evacuated from the nearby town of Ensenada. The eruption plume reached an altitude of 40,000 ft.

Rabaul Volcano, Papua New Guniea

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit 70 km southeast of Rabaul volcano, Papua New Guinea on 30th March 2015. The earthquake focus was shallow at a depth of 33 km. Earthquake of this magnitude are able to disrupt volcanic systems. Nearby volcanoes include Rabaul, Tavui, and Ambitle. A tsunami threat was issued for areas in the Pacific as far away as Hawaii, but no destructive wasves were recorded.

Ambrym Volcano, Vanuatu

A new eruption was reported at Ambrym volcano, Vanuatu on 21st February 2015. A new vent opened in the caldera and dense ash 8000 ft altitude. A lava flow was reported by pilots. If confirmed, the new lava flow is the first at Ambrym since 1989. Tourists and residents are advised of the danger near the active vents due to increased activity. The new eruption was preceded by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake 6 km south of Ambrym Island on 20th February 2015. The alert level at Ambrym is raised to 3 (on scale from 0 to maximum 5).

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano, Reunion

An eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano, Reunion began on 4th February 2015. Lava was ejected 10 m high and lava flowed from a fissure on the SW side of the volcano.

Eruptions of Soputan volcano began on 3rd January 2015. On 6th January ash emissions reached 27,000 ft. A 6.5 km exclusion zone was placed around the volcano and the alert level raised to RED.

Hunga Ha'apai Volcano, Tonga

Eruptions of Hunga Ha'apai undersea volcano, Tonga, began on 19 December 2014. Activity was reported by fisherman. Hunga Ha’apai is located 63 km away from the capital, Nuku’alofa. A white plume was visible from Kanokupolu coastline since 24 December.
