summit elevation 3332 m
stratovolcano
Note: There is a volcano with a similar name "Ruang" in the Sangihe islands in Indonesia.
Raung volcano is located in east Java, 23 km from Ijen volcano, and 40 km west of Bali. It is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Raung surrounded by several volcanic cones: G.Suket (2950 m) at the north, G.Lempeh (2932 m) at the northeast, G.Jampit (2338 m) at the east, G.Wates (2796 m) at the south, G.Gadung (2390 m) and G.Payungan (2352 m) at the west. Raung caldera is 750 m x 2,250 m.
The western flank of Raung volcano contains many hillocks which were caused by a large landslide, and lahars, 50 km long and 10-20 km wide. This area extended past the town of Jember.
2021 Eruption
An eruption of Raung volcano on 21 January sent ash to an altitude of 12,000 ft. The ash drifted towards Bali.
2015 Eruption
Activity began at Raung volcano in June 2015. On 10th July 2015 ash emissions reached 17,000 ft altitude and extended 110 nautical miles southeast. Ash cloud caused flight disruptions at Denpasar International airport, Bali.
2012 Eruption
Raung volcano was raised to level 2 alert on 22nd October 2012 after volcanic tremor recorded. A 3 km exlcusion zone was placed around the crater. A large eruption occurred on 8th November 2012. Ash emission reached a height of 30,000 ft. Ash emissions were accompanied by Strombolian eruptions 200 m above the crater.
2008 Eruptions
Smoke and ash was visible at Raung volcano on 12th and 13th June 2008. On 17th June an eruption produced an ash cloud which reached 4.5 km altitude.
2007 Eruptions
Satellite images recorded hotspots at the volcano in August 2007.
2002 Eruptions
On 25th August 2002, an ash plume was reported rising to about 9.2 km altitude above Raung volcano.

1988 Eruptions
Strombolian eruptions occurred at the volcano in July and August 1988.
1985 Eruptions
In November 1985 small eruptions occurred at Raung volcano and ash fell at Banjuyangi City, 35 km ESE of the volcano.
1982 Eruptions
In July 1982 eruptions sent ash clouds to a height of 6000 m, and ashfall damaged nearby coffee plantations.
1945 Eruption
Ash-eruption occured at Raung volcano on 20th January 1945, observed from the Observation post Kawah Ijen.
1936 Eruption
An eruption of Raung volcano was observed on 22nd August 1936. On 27th August dark clouds rose 500 m above the summit.
1597 Eruption
On 17th January 1597 Lodewijcksz saw Raung volcano throwing large columns of smoke. On the 2nd February 1597 eruptions were seen from the south coast of Bali.
1586 Eruption (possibly 1593)
An eruption in 1586, which was possibly Raung volcano, killed 10,000 people
according to Lodewijcksz. Day turned into night for 3 days. There is some uncertainty in the volcano and date of the eruption. Another observer (Godinho de
Eredia) states the eruption occurred in 1593.
