Tambora Volcano, Indonesia

Tambora volcano in Indonesia has been raised to level 2 alert (out of maximum 4) after an increase in volcanic earthquakes. In April 2011 there were 37 shallow volcanic earthquakes recorded, 167 in May, 277 in June, 363 in July, and 141 from 1-29 August. Continuous tremor was recorded on 29 and 30 August. Tourists and locals are advised to avoid the summit area of Tambora volcano. In 1815 Tambora had one of the largest eruptions on earth in the past 1000 years and ejected 100-150 cubic km of lava.

Ranakah Volcano, Indonesia

Volcanic unrest has been reported at Ranakah volcano in Indonesia. Between January and 24th August 2011 there was a background level of 1-2 shallow volcanic earthquakes per day at the volcano. On 24th August 2011 there were 10 shallow volcanic earthquakes recorded and 6 on 25th August. There is a risk that volcanic earthquakes could distrupt the lava dome causing pyroclastic flows similar to 1988. On 26th August 2011 the alert status was raised to level 2 (out of a maximum 4). People are advised to avoid the summit area.

Papandayan Volcano, Indonesia

Unrest continues at Papandayan volcano in Indonesia. Between 1-24 August 501 shallow volcanic earthquakes were detected. There has been no increase in deformation of the volcano. Visually the volcano shows a weak plume rising 1 km above the crater. There was a decrease in sulphur dioxide emission from the crater from 8 tonnes per day to 6 tonnes between 12-23 August. The alert status at the volcano remains at level 3 out of a maximum 4.

Soputan Volcano, Indonesia

Eruptions occurred at Soputan volcano in Indonesia on 14th August. The first eruption at 7:55 am produced an eruption column 1 km above the summit. The second eruption at 9:27 am produced a column 1.2 km above the summit. The alert status at the volcano was raised to level 3 (out of maximum 4) on 14th August. An 8 km exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano.

Mt Etna Volcano, Italy

A parosysm occurred at SE crater of Mt Etna volcano on 12th August. This was the 10th Paroxysm of the year and occurred 6.5 days after the previous one. This eruption was similar to the previous eruptions with a lava flow toward the Valle del Bove, lava fountains several hundred meters high, and an eruption column that rose about 3 km above the summit. The ash plume was southeastward, causing ash and lapilli falls in an area including the town of Zafferana and the coastal strip between Giarre and Acireale.

Papandayan Volcano, Indonesia

Papandayan volcano in Indonesia has been placed on level 3 alert (out of maximum 4) after an increase in unrest. Seismic activity has increased at the volcano with a doubling of volcanic earthquakes in the first 2 weeks of August compared to previous months. Deformation measurements have detected an 18 mm inflation of the volcano on 10th August compared to 4th July 2011. Temperature in one of the four craters has increased from 106.4 to 107.5 deg C between 7-12 August. A two km exclusion zone has been placed around the crater.

Karangetang Volcano, Indonesia

Karangetang volcano in Indonesia has been raised to level 3 alert after an increase in activity during July and August. On 8th July 2011 at 23:23 hr a phreatic eruption occurred north of the Main Crater with an eruption height of 150 m. On 24th July a pyroclastic flow extended 1.5 km from the main crater. On 1st August at 17:54 hr incandescent lava avalanches occurred extending a distance of about 1500 m from the Main Crater. On 7th August at 22:30 hr eruption sounds were heard from the crater, while the mountain was covered in mist. Between July 31 to August 7 2011 there were 61 avalanche earthquakes and periods of volcanic tremor. People are advised not to climb the volcano more than 500 m in height from the sea.

Marapi Volcano, Indonesia

Marapi volcano in Sumatra, Indonesia was raised to level 2 alert on 3rd August after continuous volcanic tremor was recorded. Earthquake activity was accompanied by 8 explosions and thick grey emissions rising 1 km above the summit. A 3 km exclusion zone has been placed around the crater.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

Large changes have occurred on the east rift zone of Kilauea volcano. On 3rd August the floor of Pu'u O'o crater collapsed and draining the lava lake. A lava volume of lava emerged from twelve vents on the west side of Pu'u O'o cone which flowed northwest and south. The walls of Pu'u O'o crater have started to collapse. A small amount of lava has returned to the crater floor and was visible on the webcam. At present the lava flows remain within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and have not approaced inhabited areas.

Mt Etna Volcano, Italy

On the evening of July 30, 2011, a paroxysm occurred on the eastern flank of South-East Crater. The event was similar to previous paroxysms, with emission of a lava flow toward the Valle del Bove, lava fountains that reached maximum heights of 450-500 m. An ash cloud drifted east. This eighth episode paroxysm this year lasted less than a day, with an initial phase characterized by weak Strombolian activity for about 10-12 hours, and a lava fountain lasting two to three hours. The paroxysm occurred five days after the previous one on the morning of 25th July. So far this year, the intervals between episodes of paroxysm were 36, 51, 32, 58, 10, 6 and 5.5 days.
