Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala

Eruptions continue at Pacaya volcano in Guatemala. A glow was occasionally visible at the crater between 21-26 August. Lava flows on SW flank of the volcano reached a distance of 300 m.

Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat
Lava dome growth continues at Soufriere Hills volcano on Montserrat. Rockfalls occurred on the western side of the dome. A a pyroclastic flow descended the Tar River Valley on 19th August. On 25th August rain caused pyroclastic flows on the west flank of the volcano.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile

John Seach made a summit climb of Chaiten volcano on 23rd August 2008. The summit crater contained a 120 m high lava dome. Earthquakes were felt at the summit. The lava dome was loudly degassing, and lava boulders avalanched from the dome side to the crater floor. John Seach was the first scientist to climb to summit of Chaiten volcano after the worlds largest rhyolite eruption in 100 years.

Tungurahua Volcano, Ecuador

On 23rd August heavy rains caused a natural dam at Tungurahua volcano to collapse, and water flowed down Vascún river to the north. Two people were injured and two missing as water damaged a house and destroyed buildings in Baños area.

Llaima Volcano, Chile

Eruptions continue at Llaima volcano in Chile. Three explosions occurred on 21st August with ash to 11,000 ft altitude.

Bezymianny Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia

A moderate explosive eruption occurred at Bezymianny volcano on 19th August (UT). An ash cloud was visible 1300 km west of the volcano with a maximum height of 9 km.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano, Reunion
A seismic crisis occurred at Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion on 15th August. The alert was raised to level 1 on 15th August, and reduced 3 days later when earthquakes decreased.

Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia
Lava flows and emission of ash were reported on 12th August at Krakatau volcano in Indonesia. This was preceded by an increase in seismicity.

Mayon Volcano, Philippines

On 10th August an explosion occurred at Mayon volcano in Philippines. Ash reached 9000 ft altitude and drifted ENE. The explosion lasted one minute. During the weeks prior to the eruption, there was visible glow at the crater, and increasing seismicity. A 7 km Extended Danger Zone was placed on the SE flank, and a 6 km Permanent Danger Zone remains in place on other areas. There is a continuing threat from small explosions and rockfalls from the upper slopes of the volcano. Active river channels and those areas perennially identified as lahar-prone around the volcano should be avoided when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Kasatochi Volcano, Alaska

On 10-11 August, eruptions from Kasatochi volcano caused the cancellation of some flights from Alaska to the west coast of USA.

Kasatochi Volcano, Alaska

On 7th August three eruptions occurred at Kasatochi volcano is Alaska. Highest ash emissions reached 45,000 ft and drifted 1,850 km ESE. The eruption was preceded a few days by increasing seismicity. On 8th August emissions reached 45,000 ft and the plume extended 950 km.

Tungurahua Volcano, Ecuador

Eruptions occurred at Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador on 30-31 July and 2-5 August. On 4th August roaring noises were heard at the volcano and ash emissions reached 42,000 ft altitude. Heavy ashfall was reported west of Tungurahua. Explosions were heard at Ambato, 30 km NW of the volcano.

A lahar occurred at Fuego volcano in Guatemala on 31st July. On 1st August ash emissions reached 13,000 ft altitude.

Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia

Explosive eruptions continued at Karymsky volcano during the week ending 1st August. On 25th July ash plumes reached 20,000 ft altitude. Satellite images showed hotspots at the volcano during the week.
