Moderate explosive eruptions continue at Karymsky volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. Last week ash plumes reached a height of 19,700 ft and thermal activity was recorded on satellite images.

Sheveluch Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia
Eruptions continue at Sheveluch volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. A viscous lava flow is occuring on the north-west flank of the lava dome. Lava effusion is accompanied by incandescence at the lava dome and hot avalanches. Explosive activity is creating an ash hazard for low-flying aircraft.

Heard Island Volcano, Australia
Satellite images showed hotspots at Heard Island volcano on 21 and 24 September 2012. This indicates renewed activity at the volcano. Heard Island is located 4000 kilometres southwest of Western Australia and contains one of Australia's two currently active volcanoes. Volcanic activity has been reported at the island since the 1980's. The last reported activity at Heard Island was in 2008.

Fuego Volcano, Guatemala
Eruptions of Fuego volcano in Guatemala have forced the evacuation of 33,000 people. The eruptions produced ash emissions which were visible in the capital Guatemala City, 75 km away. Pyroclastic flows travelled down the slopes of the volcano and heavy ashfall was reported in nearby villages. Fuego volcano is located 18 km SW of the city of Antigua. On the day of the eruption a magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit 47 km south of the volcano. The explosive phase of the eruption was preceded by emission of a 100 m long lava flow down the flank.

San Cristobal Volcano, Nicaragua
Eruptions occurred at San Cristobal volcano, Nicaragua on 8th September 2012. Ash emissions reached 5000 m above the crater rim, and drifted 50 km west-north-west. Sulphur dioxide emissions were 3200 tons per day compare to a normal emission of 550-700 tons per day. On the northwest sector of the volcano incandescent material caused burns to six livestock.

Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia
Activity has increased at Krakatau volcano, Indonesia. On 2nd September 2012 constant tremor was recorded at the volcano, accompanied by Strombolian eruptions to a height of 300 m above the crater. The explosions rattled windows on the west coast of Java, 50 km away. The alert status at Krakatau has been raised to level 3 (out of a maximum 4). A 1 km exclusion zone has been placed around the crater.
