Raoul Volcano, Kermadec Islands
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit 70 km SSE of Raoul Island at 3:19 am on Tuesday 30th September 2008. Raoul Island contains an active volcano which last erupted in 2006. Earthquakes of this size can sometimes disrupt nearby volcanoes.

Shiveluch Volcano, Russia

An eruption occurred at Shiveluch volcano in Russia on 25th September. At 8 am local time the eruption produced an ash column 4.5 km high. The eruption was accompanied by earthquakes. There was no threat to nearby communities according to the Geophysics Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Chaitén Volcano, Chile

Eruptions continue at Chaiten volcano in Chile. On the afternoon of 23rd September, continuous emissions were observed from the volcano. Ash fell in Chaiten town as a broad plume drifted south. A hotspot remains visible on satellite images. The volcano remains dangerous with an active lava dome growing in the summit crater.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano, Reunion

An eruption began at Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Sunday 21st September. A small lava pond formed in the bottom of Dolomieu crater fed by a fissure on the west side. The eruption was accompanied by ten earthquakes. High levels of sulphur dioxide have been reported at the volcano. This is the first eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano since the large eruption in April 2007, which was called the "eruption of the century."

Shiveluch Volcano, Russia

Eruptions continue at Shiveluch volcano in Russia. Lava flow is effusing on the south-western flank of the lava dome. Seismicity was above background levels this week. Hot avalanches occurred at the lava dome, and fumarolic activity. The volcano presents a hazard to low flying aircraft with ash explosions up to 10 km (32,800 ft.) altitude possible at any time.

Shiveluch Volcano, Russia

A dome collapse has occurred at Shiveluch volcano in Russia on 13th September. The south western side of the dome collapsed creating ash which rose to 6500 m above sea level. The ash plume drifted 100 km NE. The dome collapse was accompanied by lava flows. Shiveluch is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka.

Dukono Volcano, Indonesia

A large earthquake (Magnitude 6.6) hit Halmahera in Indonesia at 9:00 am, local time, on 11th September 2008. The earthquake was located near Dukono volcano which has regular eruptions.

Usu Volcano, Japan

A large earthquake (Magnitude 6.9) hit Hokkaido in Northern Japan at 9:20 am, local time, on 11th September 2008. The earthquake was located near Usu volcano which last erupted in 2001.

Kavachi Volcano, Solomon Islands

A large earthquake (Magnitude 6.1) hit Kavachi volcano in the Solomon Islands, on 9th September at 11:22 pm local time. The earthquake had a focus at a depth of 10 km. Kavachi volcano last erupted in 2007.

Vanuatu Earthquakes

Two large earthquakes have hit Vanuatu. The first earthquake was magnitude 6.2 and hit 55 km SSW of Tanna Island at 2:03 pm local time on 8th September. The second earthquake was magnitude 7.0 and hit at 5:52 am on 9th September. The epicentre was located 40 km NW of Mt Suretamatai Volcano on Vanua Lava Island. Mt Suretamatai volcano last erupted in 1965. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre stated there was no tsunami threat.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

An active lava lake is visible beneath Halemaumau vent at the summit of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Lava has not yet erupted onto the floor of the crater. The subsurface lava lake is estimated to be 50 m in diameter and located 100 m inside the vent. Sulphur dioxide emission rates at the summit are ten times background levels. Lava continues to flow through tubes from the east rift zone to the ocean. There are some areas of surface lava flows.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

Eruptions continue at both summit and east rift zone of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Halemaumau vent has been emitting ash, with seismic tremor and incandescence. An explosive eruption occurred at the summit of Kilauea volcano on 2nd September. This was the sixth explosion at Halemaumau since the vent opened almost 6 months ago. Sulphur dioxide emission was 1300 tonnes/day on 3rd September. Lava continues to flow from east rift zone to the ocean.

Taal Volcano, Philippines

Seismic unrest has been reported at Taal volcano in Philippines. On 28th August, 10 earthquakes were recorded at the volcano. Earthquakes were felt by residents of barangay Pira-piraso village, and accompanied by rumbling sounds. The earthquakes were located northeast of the volcano island near Daang Kastila. An exclusion zone has been placed around the crater. The northern portion of the Main Crater rim, near Daang Kastila Trail, may be hazardous.
