Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii)
Lava from Kilauea volcano has entered the Royal Gardens subdivision in Hawaii. On 29th January channelized 'a'a flow burned through vegetation and passed Tubarose St, Ali'i Avenue, and `Ekaha St. Lava has been flowing across old lava flows, and has covered some new areas. Lava flowing through vegetation can produce fire and methane explosions, and lava advancing over asphalt produces hazardous fumes and should be avoided. Lava is flowing outside National Park boundaries.

Anatahan Volcano, Mariana Islands
Since 23rd January 2008 there have been periods of elevated tremor lasting for several hours at Anatahan volcano. Satellite images show low level sulphur dioxide emissions. Anatahan is still unsafe for habitation. Travel to the island remains restricted, except for scientific study. Emergency declaration for Anatahan has been in place since the first recorded volcanic activity in May 2003.

Galeras Volcano, Colombia
An explosive eruption occurred at Galeras Volcano in Colombia on Thursday 17th January at 8:06 pm, local time. Preceding the eruption, there were five tornillo earthquakes measured between 8:05 am on January 16 and 9:14 am on January 17, 2008. The earthquakes were located near the active cone, close to the surface. About 8000 people were ordered to evacuate, but only 100 left their homes. This is the most severe eruption at the volcano since it reactivated in 1989. Ash was reported to reach 36,000 ft altitude.

Rabaul Volcano, Papua New Guinea
Tokua airport has been reopened after being closed between Wednesday and Sunday last week due to ash emissions from Rabaul Volcano in Papua New Guinea. Air Niugini warned that the unpredictable nature of the volcano and variable winds could result the closure of the airport with little warning. Since Saturday ash plumes have been blown towards the Duke of York Islands and mostly out to sea.
Air Niugini resumed flights on advice from Rabaul Volcano Observatory and the Tokua Control Tower.

Kelut Volcano (Indonesia)
A lava dome continues to grow at Kelut Volcano in Indonesia. A seismic crisis preceded dome formation in October 2007. The dome is now 130 meters in diameter, with an area of 700,000 sq m. Recent lava dome formation, volcanic earthquakes, and gas emissions all indicate the volcano in on the verge of erupting. The larger the dome, the more powerful the eruption will be.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the current eruption at Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. Its the longest lasting rift zone eruption at the volcano in 700 years. During the 19th and 20th century there was a 100 year long summit eruption which included a lava lake. Lava continues to erupt from the SE rift zone from fissures fed by shallow magma chamber under Pu`u `O`o crater. During the past 24 hours, lava advanced slowly southwards. Since July 2007, lava has been advancing in a NE direction outside the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
