Zao volcano is the northern most active volcano in Honshu.
The volcano forms part of the Ushiro Tateyama mountain Range. Other mountains in the range include: Shiroumadake (2932m), Shakushidake (2812m),  Hakuba Yarigatake (2903m), Karamatsudake (2696m), Goryudake (2814m).

Okama Crater is a well known tourist destination at the volcano. The lake is 360 m wide and 60 m deep with a pH of 1.3 and has been the site of the most recent eruptions. Goshikidake is post caldera pyroclastic cone.

2011 Great Earthquake
Tthe Great 2011 Earthquake (magnitude 8.9) occurred 170 km east of the volcano on 11th March 2011.
