For many years Mt Yelia was a familiar landmark for pilots flying between Port Moresby and Goroka, but its volcanic nature was not realised until 1962. Solfatara activity occurs at the summit of Yelia volcano.
The volcano contains andesitic lava domes at the summit and NW side. The structure and geology of the volcano are similar to Lamington volcano, therefore a similar Pelean eruption is possible in the future.
