West Mata volcano is located at the northern end of the Tonga volcanic arc. The volcano was discovered during a November 2008.

2009 eruption
In early May 2009 eruptions occurred at two vents, at the end of a 5 km long fissure. Pillow lava was erupted at a depth of 1208 m. Prometheus vent erupted explosively and ejected tephra into the water.

2009
