The volcano is located 168 km SE of Urumqi. Eruptions were recorded during the Song Dynasty.

Writings from the Song Dynasty record activity at the volcano' "The volcano of Turfan or Ho-chow, emits an un-interrupted column of smoke, which at night appears like a flaming torch".
