Shikotsu Volcano is composed of a 15 x 13 km diameter caldera. The caldera contains Japan's northernmost lake which doesn't feeeze in winter (Lake Shikotsu-ko).
The lake is 360 m deep and has 25 m underwater visibility.
In winter the Chitose-Shikotsuko-Hyobaku-matsuri Festival (Ice Fall Festival) features objects made out of ice from the lake water.
