San Jorge volcano is located in central Azores. San Jorge Island is 54 km long and only 5 km wide. It was formed by fissure-fed eruptions.

1964 eruption
An undersea eruption began on 18 February 1964 off the coast of Sao Jorge . The eruption was accompanied a felt seismic swarm at the island. A sulphur smell was notices on the island. A submarine eruption was suspected but nothing was observed above sea level.
