Puracé volcano is located in SW Colombia, 25 km SE of Popayan. The volcano is one of the most active in Colombia. There is a 500 m wide summit crater. Large eruptions occurred in 1849, 1869, and 1885.

The last eruption of Puracé volcano in 1977 deposited ash 7 km away. In 1990 solfatara were observed at the summit and hot springs on the flank.
