Eruptions continue at Heard Island volcano in Australian territory. Hotspots were obsrved at the volcano throughout August. The volcano resumed activity in May 2006 after being quiet for two years. Big Ben is the active volcanic cone on Heard Island.

Mayon Volcano (Philippines)

Lava flows and lava avalanches continue at Mayon volcano in Philippines. Yesterday there were two explosive eruptions at the volcano and high levels of sulphur dioxide emission. Over 32,000 people remain in evacuation centres.

Tungurahua Volcano (Ecuador)

About 19,000 people have been evacuated from around Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador after the eruption which began on 16th August. Yesterday, lava flows were confirmed on the NW flank of the volcano.

Mayon Volcano (Philippines)

The alert level at Mayon volcano in Philippines has been increased to "four", the second highest level, after ash emissions today. This indicates that larger explosive eruptions are possible. Evacuation has been ordered for 20,000 people within an 8 km radius of the crater.

Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii)

A 5-10 acre coastal collapse has occurred at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The collapse happened at 12:47 pm on 30th July on the west side of the East Lae'apuki lava bench. This represents less than 15% of the bench size. Explosions created by lava-seawater interaction sent lava fragments 130 ft inland towards an area roped off for tourists. The collapse lasted for a period of minutes and occurred without warning. Last November a 44-acre section of the bench collapsed in the same area, about two miles from the end of Chain of Craters Road.

Lava has extended beyond the 6 km exclusion zone at Mayon volcano in Philippines. Danger signs have been placed 7 km from the volcano to prevent tourists and locals from venturing closer to the lava on the SE side of the volcano. Mayon volcano is capable of producing pyroclastic flows as well as the current effusive eruption of lava.

The main lava flow at Mayon volcano has reached within 100 m of the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone. The lava flow has reached 2 kilometers longer than the 2001 eruption. Sulphur dioxide emission remains high at 7,050 tons per day. Residents of several villages around the volcano have been advised to prepare for evacuation.
