Mt Etna Volcano (Italy)

A series of small earthquakes occurred at Mt Etna Volcano in Italy on 30 and 31 October. The largest earthquake measured 3.9 on the richter scale, with an epicentre near Nicolosi on the southern slope of Etna. Some of the earthquakes were felt by residents of nearby villages. Similar earthquake activity preceded the eruptions of 2001 and 2002 at the volcano. There have been signs of renewed activity at Etna during October, with some explosions recorded at Bocca Nuova Crater.

Garbuna Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

There has been an increase in seismic activity over the past few days at Garbuna Volcano in Papua New Guinea. A report from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory states there is still a chance of another eruption at the volcano, which erupted last week for the first time in 1700 years.

Yasur volcano in Vanuatu continues it impressive eruptive activity with many eruptions per hour. Yasur is one of the world's most active volcanoes and has been in continuous Strombolian and mild Vulcanian eruption for at least 800 years. Travel to Yasur volcano with volcanologist John Seach on a tour beginning on 3rd December 2005.

Langila Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

On 29th October a 9000 ft high plume was visible NNW of Langila volcano in Papua New Guinea. Langila volcano is one of the most active in Papua New Guinea and has been in regular observed eruption since 1950's. Langila volcano is located on the remote Cape Gloucester region of West New Britain Island.

Manam Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

Low level eruptions continue at Manam volcano in Papua New Guinea. On 29th October a plume to 10,000 ft was visible extending NW of the volcano. Manam volcano produced the world's largest eruption for the year 2004. Manam is the most picturesque of  Papua New Guinea volcanoes.

Garbuna Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

A survey of Garbuna volcano has revealed the possibility of a larger eruption. A strong sulphur smell is present in the south ans south east, and there are reports of hot streams getting hotter. Seismic monitoring shows periods of increased volcanic earthquakes. There has been one felt earthquake.

Observations of Garbuna volcano recorded pale grey ash rising a few hundred metres above the summit on Tuesday 25th October. Last week Garbuna volcano erupted after being dormant for 1700 years.

Semeru Volcano (Indonesia)

Eruptions continue at Semeru volcano in Indonesia. On 25th October at 0455 hr (UT) a vertical plume was visible rising to 15,000 ft. Semeru is currently the most active volcano in Indonesia, with vulcanian eruptions occurring many times daily. The summit area of Semeru is dangerous and should be approached with caution.

Sierra Negra Volcano (Galapagos Islands)

Sierra Negra volcano erupted on the Galapagos Islands on 22nd October at 2330 hr UT. Ash was observed to 25,000 ft. The eruption was preceded by seismic activity felt at the village Villamil 20 km SE of the caldera. At At 1730 hr an explosion was heard by people in the village. Lava fountains occurred to a height of 300 m.

Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii)

Eruptions continue at Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. Lava is entering the sea at numerous locations at East Lae`apuki. Lava is transported to the ocean entry throught tubes. No lava is visible on the coastal plain. Higher up the hill at elevations of 600-1200 ft there is visible lava. Currently lava at Kilauea volcano is in an inaccessible location, but visitors can view the ocean entry from 4 km away at the end of Chain of Crater's Road. The source of the lava flows at Pu`u `O`o shows activity, with many vents showing incandescence. The current eruption of Kilauea volcano, which began in 1983, is the largest on the east rift zone in hundreds of years.

Langila Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

Forceful emissions of thick grey-brown ash are occurring at Langila volcano in Papua New Guinea. On 21st October a plume extended 20 nautical miles SW of the volcano. Langila remains at level 2 alert (4 highest). Continuing emissions are expected. Three volcanoes are currently erupting on New Britain Island in Papua New Guinea.

Barren Island Volcano (India)

Intermittent activity continues at Barren Island Volcano in the Andaman Islands. A low level plume was observed from a Qantas flight extending 35 nautical miles WNW on 21st October.

Garbuna Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

An eruption plume is visible today at Garbuna volcano in Papua New Guinea. Food crops in the area have been affected by the eruption of the volcano which was the first in 1700 years. Water at Garu village had been contaminated and there has been fish and vegetation killed. Volcanologists from Rabaul Volcano Observatory will remain in the area to monitor the volcano with portbale siesmographs.

Paluweh Volcano (Indonesia)

Paluweh volcano (also known as Rokatenda) has increased signs of activity since Saturday. Clouds of white steam jhave been emitting from the volcano, and people living on its sloped have reported earthquakes. Residents have moved away from the volcano fearing an eruption.

Five volcanoes are currently erupting in Papua New Guinea. Bagana, Rabaul, Garbuna, Langila, and Manam. Papua New Guinea contains the most volcanoes of any country in the South West Pacific.

More than 20,000 people are at risk from the eruption of Garbuna volcano in Papua New Guinea. Volcanic activity intensified yesterday afternoon. The eruption caught everyone by surprise because there was no monitoring equipment installed on the volcano, and no precursor earthquakes were felt. Ash has fallen on Garu village and water suipplies have been contaminated. An emergency assistance plan is being prepared in case of an increase in activity. Volcanoes that resume eruptions after long periods of inactivity, such as this, may be very dangerous. A close watch should be kept on this volcano over the coming months.

Garbuna volcano erupted in Papua New Guinea on Sunday evening 16th October. An eruption column was reported to 25,000 ft. The last eruption of Garbuna volcano was 1700 years ago.
