Hudson Volcano, Chile

Hudson volcano in southern Chile has been placed on the highest level 5 alert, with an eruption possible within hours or days. An earthquake swarm occurred at the volcano on 26th October 2011. Population centres are located downwind of the volcano and ashfall would be expected after an eruption. The summit contains ice therefore an eruption would likely generate lahars. There is a possibility of secondary lahars after rainfall mobilises ash deposits. Visual observations of the volcano on 26th October showed a white column, with little ash, rising to a height of 1.5 km above the volcano. The last eruption of Hudson volcano in 1991 was very large and sent ash across Patagonia, Falkland Islands, and Australia.

Krakatau Volcano, Indonesia

Krakatau volcano in Indonesia was raised to level 3 alert (out of maximum 4) on 30th September 2011. Between 18-30 September volcanic earthquakes and tremor were recorded at the volcano. Explosive eruptions have occurred intermittently at the volcano between 2007 and 2011. During this time Strombolian eruptions sent ash and lapilli to a radius of 1.5 km from the crater. Volcanic bombs may fall over the whole island at any time. Explosive eruptions in July 2011 destroyed the seismic monitoring equipment, which resumed operation on 18th September. A 2km exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano.
