New Zealand Earthquake (Magnitude 6.8)

A large earthquake hit the north island of New Zealand today at 8:55 pm local time. The earthquake measured 6.8 and had an epicentre located 150 km east of Taupo volcano. There was damage in the Gisbourne area.

Sheveluch Volcano (Russia)

Sheveluch volcano in Russia, erupted yesterday. It was one the most powerful eruptions at the volcano in years. Ash reached 12 km altitude and drifted 600 km west of the volcano.

Monowai Seamount (SW Pacific)
25.88 S, 177.18 E, summit elevation -135 m, submarine volcano

A major earthquake (mag 7.8) hit 33 km west of Monowai seamount today at 07:28 pm, local time.
The earthquake focus was 149 km depth. No tsunami was expected. Monowai seamount is located halfway between Tonga and the Kermadec Islands, and is the site of frequent submarine eruptions.

Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica)

Volcanic activity has increased at Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica. Yesterday, a thick white column of gas was emitted from the crater. Unrest began at the volcano in August 2007, when new fractures and fumaroles formed. The last eruption of Turrialba volcano in 1866 covered most of Costa Rica in ash.

Jebel al-Tair Volcano (Yemen)

Jebel al-Tair volcano erupted on Monday 3rd December. The eruption followed two days of seismic activity. The volcano has been active since it erupted on 30th September 2007, and there have been occasional lava flows. This eruption occurred at fissures that formed on the island after the previous eruption. The 30th September eruption led to the deaths of nine people and 47 others were injured. Jabel al-Tair (Bird Mountain) island is about 3km long, covers an area of 3.9 sq km. It lies about 100km off the nearest Yemeni coast.

Popocatepetl Volcano (Mexico)

Activity has resumed at Popocatepetl Volcano in Mexico. Over the past 24 hours there were 6 emissions of ash, with a maximum height of 2000m above the crater. There were reports of ash falling in Atlautla, Tepetlixpa and Amecameca in the State of Mexico, as well as in Iztacalco in the Federal District. The eruptions are probably phreatomagmatic, caused by the action of rainwater on the lava dome. A 12km exclusion zone remains in place around the crater.
