Ulawun Volcano (Papua New Guinea)

A low level plume was visible on satellite images of Ulawun volcano yesterday. The plume was ash poor. Ulawun is the highest volcano in the 1000 km long Bismarck volcanic arc which stretches from Rabaul to Wewak.

Kliuchevskoi Volcano (Russia)

Two lava flows, each one kilometer long, have been reported at Kluichevskoi Volcano in Russia. At present the lava is not a threat to Klyuchi a town of 5000 people 32 km from the volcano. On Thursday, 100 earthquakes were recorded at the volcano and ash emissions to 500 m above the crater drifted 200 km from the volcano. The volcano has showed increased activity since February 15 this year.

Home Reef Volcano (Tonga)

Pumice from the August 2006 eruption of Home Reef in Tonga has reached the east coast of Australia. Beaches in southern Queensland and Northern NSW have pumice at the high tide level. The pumice took 3 months to reach Vanuatu and 8 months to reach eastern Australia, 3400 km from the volcano.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano (Reunion)

Lava flows continue at Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Yesterday morning more than 50 earthquakes were recorded. Lava has set fire to vegetation and is located close to houses. Access to the crater is forbidden, and the public is being kept away from the lava flows.

Lopevi Volcano (Vanuatu)

Lopevi volcano in Vanuatu erupted today. Ash emissions to 14,000 ft altitude were reported at 11:33 am local time, and were observed by pilots and visible on satellite images. Ash drifted eastwards away from inhabited islands. A change in wind direction may send ash over populated areas. Lopevi is one of the most active volcanoes in Vanuatu.

Huila Volcano (Colombia)

Huila volcano in Colombia erupted yesterday forcing the evacuation of several thousand people. The volcano began erupting one month ago after being dormant for 452 years.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano (Reunion)

A sulphur dioxide cloud from the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano has reached Australia, over 6000 km from the volcano. The cloud is dilute and no ash has been reported. Pilots have been asked to report anything unusual.

Taal Volcano (Philippines)

Taal volcano in the Philippines has been showing signs of unrest. The crater is hot and bubbling and people have been advised to stay away. The crater lake is a popular tourist destination close to Manila. Taal volcano last erupted in 1977.

Bulusan Volcano (Philippines)

Bulusan volcano in the Philippines erupted today sending ash 5 km high. The volcano had been quiet for three weeks and exploded without warning at 5:45 am local time. There is a 4 km permanent danger zone around the volcano.

Piton de la Fournaise Volcano (Reunion)

A second lava flow at Piton de la Fournaise volcano reached the sea on 4th April. Residents in the town of Tremblet are preparing for lava flows but no threat is imminent. On the 6th April there was a collapse in Dolomieu crater.

A new eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano commenced yesterday at 1000 hr, local time. A fissure eruption 500 m long produced impressive lava flows which reached the sea.

Great Earthquake, Solomon Islands (Mag 8.1)

A great earthquake hit the Solomon Islands this morning at 0739 hr, local time. The magnitude 8.1 earthquake had a shallow epicentre (40 km depth) and hit 42 km east of Simbo volcano. A magnitude 6.7 earthquake was felt 8 minutes later. Simbo volcano showed signs of increasing activity in September 2006 after being quiet for almost a century. A tsunami warning was issued for Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Northeastern Australia, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji. A Tsunami watch was issued for Kermadec Islands north of New Zealand. A 10 m high tsunami hit parts of the Solomon Islands. On Simbo Island, waves hit houses 200 m inland and 15 houses were swept away. More than 500 houses were damaged in Gizo. Damage from the tsunami was recorded at Rossel Island in Papua New Guinea where 2 m waves swept away seven houses.

Semi-continuous emissions of ash have been reported at Rabaul volcano in Papua New Guinea. Today, a plume reached 10,000 ft elevation and drifted 25 nautical miles NE.

Mt Etna Volcano (Italy)

New eruptions have occurred at Mt Etna volcano in Italy. At 0724 hr on 29th March there was an increase in volcanic tremor, followed by explosive activity and lava fountains. Two lava flows were observed between southern crater and central crater of Bocca Nuova. The effusive vents are located at 3180m and 3050m elevation and the lava has flowed 1 km towards SE crater.
