The volcano is located on the shore of Lake Nicaragua. It has a nearly symmetrical cone with a large summit crater.
A lava flow which enters Lake Nicaragua forms a cluster of islands known as Las Isletas.
The area has been declared a natural park and contains 50 species of mammals, 174 species of birds, 30 of reptiles and 750 species of flora.
