There are three volcanoes on Batan Island. Mahatao volcano is the oldest and is located in central Batan. It last erupted in the Late Miocene. Matarem volcano in the south of the island erupted in the Pliocene to Early Pleistocene. Iraya volcano is located in the north of the island and has been active since Late Pleistocene.

Eruptions at Iraya volcano have been Pelean, pyroclastic flows and lava flows.
In 1998 there was an earthquake swarm at the volcano.
