Hydrographers Range is located east of Lamington volcano. The volcano contains well preserved cinder cones and explosion craters. Hydrographers Range is one of four large Quaternary stratovolcanoes on the north coast of southeastern New Guinea. The other three are Mt Lamington, Mount Trafalgar, and Mount Victory.

Hydrographers Range is a major andesite volcano which is located in an area without a Benioff-Wadati zone.
