Hodson volcano forms the impressive Visokoi Island in the South Sandwich Islands.

During a voyage to the island in 1830 a captain reported a burning mountain on Visokoi Island. This refers to the first historically observed eruption of Hodson volcano.

In 1775 James Cook discovered the South Sandwich Islands and called them "the most horrible coast in the world", and "doomed by nature never once to feel the warmth of the Sun's rays."
