Groppo volcano is located in the western Afar region of Ethiopia. The volcano consists of small 930-m-high alkali rhyolitic stratovolcano, 3.8 km wide caldera, associated eruptive centres and lava flows.

The volcano is 30 km east of the Ethiopian escarpment. The closest volcano is Dabbayra, 71 km NNW.
