Eagle lake is located at the junction of the Sierra Nevada, Cascades, and Basin Range. There are fifteen cinder cones and lava flow vents under 100 m high. Eagle Lake volcano consists of polygenetic cones in a volcano-testonic depression.

The most recent eruptions occurred 170,000 years ago at Black mountain which is a faulted, mafic, andesite volcano.
