The undersea volcano in located 20 km SW of Rendova Island. It was discovered by Moana Wave research vessel during a November 1985 to January 1986 cruise.
Coleman lies on the subducting Australian tectonic plate. It is in the initial stage of of dismemberment as it becomes subducted at the edge of the Pacific plate.
