Coatepeque Volcano is located 50 km west of San Salvador, El Salvador. It consists of a 6.5 x 11.5 km collapse caldera elongated NW.

The caldera contains a 5 km diameter lake with a depth of 120 m. The caldera walls rise above the lake to a maximum height 950 m on the southwest rim.

Eruptions from the volcano have produced 24 cubic km of tephra which partially
covers southwestern El Salvador, and extends into Guatemala.
