Amboy volcano covers an area of 70 sq km and contains mainly pahoehoe lava. Amboy crater is a prominant cinder cone in the NE of the lava field.

The lava fields at Amboy volcano were used as a test site for potential Mars Penetrators. The basaltic pahoehoe lava flows at Amboy are probably representative of the majority of the basalt flows on the surface of Mars.
