TOMS
- Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer
TOMS is a space-based, ultraviolet
spectrometer which measures sulphur dioxide erupted by volcanoes.
TOMS has measured SO2
emissions from over 50 volcanic eruptions.
SO2 has a strong absorption
band at 300-320 nm.
Large SO2 emissions
detected by TOMS
Mt Pinatubo (1991) 20 million tonnes.
El Chichon (1982) 7 million tonnes.
Nyamuragira (1981) 4 million tonnes.
Cerro Hudson (1991) 1.5 million tonnes.
Sierra Negro (1979) 1.2 million tonnes.
