A solfatara is a vent which emits
sulphorous gases.
SO2 and H2S
Compare with a fumarole which emits
mainly steam.
The Solfatara Stage refers to a volcano
which is between eruptions or no longer has a supply
of magma but still emits sulphorous
gases.
