Shortland Island is 22 km long and 16 km wide, situated close to Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea.
The Shortland Island group is geologically classified as part of Bougainville Island.

Shortland Island has low relief and is composed of andesitic lavas in the north and sandstone and coral reef debris in the south.
There is recent raised coral reef. The main town on the island is Korovou.
