Renewed
eruption of Agung volcano, Indonesia sent ash to an altitude of
30,000 ft. Exclusion zone increased to radius of up to 10 km from
the crater. Agung was raised to highest level 4 alert.

A
summit eruption occurred at Agung volcano, Bali, Indonesia, 21st
November 2017. Small ash cloud rising 700 m above summit and
drifting east. Five villages affected by the ash, including Pidpid,
Nawakerti, Bukit Galah, Sebudi and Abang.

Ambae Volcano, Vanuatu
A
summit eruption has been reported at Ambae volcano, Vanuatu. A new
cinder cone formed in the summit lake, and a lava pond is visible.
This is the first time a lava pond has been observed at Ambae
volcano.

Agung Volcano, Bali, Indonesia
On
22nd September 2017, Agung volcano, Bali was raised to maximum
level 4 alert. 35,000 people were evacuated. Previous reported
eruptions of Agung were in 1963, 1843, 1821?, 1808. The last
eruption in 1963 was similar in magnitude/intensity to Mt St
Helens (1980) and Mt Vesuvius (79 AD).

Ambae Volcano, Vanuatu
Activity
increased at Ambae volcano, Vanuatu on 23 September 2017. Ash
emissions occurred from the summit. The alert level was raised to 4
(out of a maximum 5). Preparations were being made to evacuate up to
5000 people.

Agung Volcano, Bali, Indonesia
On
18th September 2017, Agung volcano, Bali was raised to level 3
alert (out of a maximum 4). People are advised not to climb or
camp inside Agung crater, and in areas within a 6 km radius of
Agung, or at elevations above 950 m from sea level. The exclusion
zone radius is increased to 7.5 km in the North, Southeast and
South-Southwest. An increase in earthquakes at the volcano is
caused by magma pressure cracking rocks. The history of activity
at Agung indicates the potential threats of pyroclastic falls,
pyroclastic flows, and lava flows. Agung volcano last erupted in
1963. The eruptions of Agung volcano in 1963 created a crimson
sunset glow over America and Europe.

Magnitude 8.2 Earthquake, Mexico
On
8th September 2017 a magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit off the Pacific
coast of Mexico. The closest volcanoes to the epicentre are
Tacana, Tajumulca, and Santa Maria in Guatemala. Earthquakes of
this magnitude may affect volcanoes within a 500 km radius.

Baitoushan Volcano, North Korea/ China border
On
3rd September 2017, North Korea detonated a nuclear explosion 105
km southeast of Baitoushan volcano. The explosion produced a
magnitude 6.3 earthquake, which resulted in weak ground shaking at
the volcano. Earthquakes of this magnitude have the ability to
produce strong eruptions at nearby volcanoes. Baitoushan is
considered a dangerous volcano due to its history of large explosive
eruptions.

Dieng volcano, Java, Indonesia
A small phreatic (?) eruption occurred at Sileri Crater, Dieng
volcano on 2nd July 2017. Ten out of 17 tourists who were at the
crater at the time were injured. A rescue helicopter crashed killing
all 8 people on board.

Lokon volcano, Sulawesi, Indonesia
Activity at Lokon volcano at midday on 17th June 2017. An ash plume
was visible rising a few hundred metres above the summit, and
extending 10 km to the east.

Kambalny volcano, Kamchatka, Russia
Kambalny volcano erupted on 25th March 2017. Satellite images showed
a plume reaching 26,000 ft altitude. The last estimated eruption was
600 years ago.

Mt Etna Volcano, Italy
On 27th February 2017 Strombolian explosions intensified from new
southeast crater at Mt Etna volcano. This was accompanied by a lava
flow which quickly reached the base of the cone and directed toward
the southwest, in the direction of Monte Frumento Supino. Ashfall
was reported at Zafferana and Linguaglossa. The eruptions were
accompanied by large amplitude tremor, but no ground deformation. Mt
Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe, and dominates the
landscape of NE Sicily. The first eruptions at Etna occurred 500,000
years ago. Mt Etna has the longest period of documented eruptions in
the world. Etna is noted for the wide variety of eruption styles.
The volcano is at its most spectacular when when both summit and
flank eruptions occur simultaneously.

Vanuatu volcanoes
